What Would *I* Give?

One of my very most favorite scriptures come from the Book of Alma, specifically, Alma 22. Here, Aaron teaches King Lamoni's father about Christ. Never knowing about Christ before, he says "If you say there is a God, I believe", "Is this the same Great Spirit who brought our fathers out of Jerusalem?" He then pledges everything he has, his whole kingdom, to know this God. When he's told that his possessions and riches won't bring him closer to God, he prays his first prayer "O God, Aaron hath told me that there is a God; and if there is a God, and if thou art God, wilt thou make thyself known unto me, and I will give away all my sins to know thee..." (Alma 22:18)

Those who know me, know I don't have a whole lot of riches. Luckily, I don't have a whole lot of sins. (Though I work on those, too!!) What would *I* give to know Thee?

I believe in my heart that my biggest trials are my biggest blessings. I would endure my trials with a cheerful heart.....to know Thee.

It may not seem like it, but it really is,

It Could Always Be Worse! :)

Here's a catch-up post from Aug 23, 2011

Today, David read a story in his literature book that just said it all :)
There was a poor man, living in a very stressful situation. He lived in a one-room house with his wife and his mother-in-law. He spent his day's tending his fields, milking his cow, feeding the chickens, tending his goats, and scraping together a living. He was miserable. One day, he went to his rabbi to complain. The rabbi told him that he had a solution to all of his problems, but that he had to follow his exact instructions. After the man agreed, the rabbi told him to bring his chickens in the house and to come back to see him in a week. After a week, the man came back and said "Rabbi! This is crazy! The chickens are making a mess of my house! My wife and her mother are complaining day and night!" The rabbi reminded him of his promise and told him that this week, he wanted him to bring his goats to live with him in his house and to come back to him the next week. If the chickens were bad, imagine what having the goats were like! A week later, the man returned and said, "Rabbi, the chickens are pecking us, and the goats are chewing everything we own!" The rabbi said nothing, but reminded him of his promise. This week, he told him to bring in the cow. After a week, the man came back and said "Rabbi! The chickens are squawking loudly, the goats are chewing on everything, and the cow takes up all the space in the house! We have had to sleep in the barn!". The rabbi just smiled and told him to relocate all the animals back to the barn and to come back in a week. When the man returned, he thanked the rabbi. "Rabbi, my wife and mother-in-law are so happy! We have so much space in our home, and we can eat and sleep without being disturbed by chickens or goats! My house has never been so clean!". The man had learned to be thankful for what little he had and thanked God every day for it.
I think that this story really illustrates why we are doing so AWESOME during this deployment. Yes, we miss having a husband and father, but it really could be much worse. There are mother's, wives, and children worried about the safety of their soldiers as they work in combat zones. My husband has a nice (though very dusty) air-conditioned office. There are families out there mourning the loss of their soldiers. I know that mine will be home relatively soon. There are even others who have the suffering of seperation turn into trouble and discord in their marriages. I get to spend a few minutes every mornig and late at night chatting with my husband on FB, where we tell each other how deeply we love each other and are thankful for what each is doing for the other each day, even if all it was was  coming on to chat for a minute or two.
Instead of chickens and goats (or a cow!), I have sweet children. I may have a dishwasher likes to flood my kitchen, but hey... we have food to eat each day to dirty our dishes with!! Life is good, and will be that much better when my soldier comes home :)

A Return To Awesomeness!

Hi y'all.... Have you ever sent a child to clean their room and returned a bit later to find that same child sitting on their bed, staring at their room? "It's been 15 minutes! Why haven't you cleaned anything?" , "I can't do it! It's too big!!" ..... sigh.... Some days I think I must be 5 years old. It's time to play catch-up, one randomly awesome post at a time! Fly lady always says "You aren't behind! Start where you are!" I think I'll start where I am and maybe touch on the random awesomeness of the last few weeks. It beats the heck out of running my mountain of "my dishwasher keeps flooding my kitchen" laundry, or hand washing my mountain of "the dishwasher and kitchen sink are backed-up, so every dish in my house is dirty" dishes. Thank goodness this blog isn't in smell-o-vision ;) Did I mention how grateful I am for the McDonalds down the street?

Dad's Famous Clam Chowder

My husband sure loves us! The way he shows his love is to cook... and cook... and cook! One of his most favorite meals to cook is clam chowder.
Bryan e-mailed his dad and requested his special clam chowder recipie to use for his cooking merit badge. Here's the recipie:

1 c celery, diced
1 c onion, diced
1 c carrot, diced
2 c potatoes, diced
1 can diced clams
3/4 stick butter
1/2 c flour
4 c half and half or milk
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
tobasco to taste

Chop your veggies and place in large pot, drain clam juice into pot with veggies, reserving the clams for later. Cover veggies with just enough water to almost cover the veggies. Simmer untill firm, but cooked.

While veggies are simmering, melt butter in large pot. Add flour and stir untill mixed. Cook untill bubbly. Then, slowly add cream or milk while stiring quickly. Cook and stir until just boiling. Add cream mixture and clams to veggies. Stir. Add salt, pepper, and tobasco to taste. ENJOY!!

We usually make a x3 or x4 sized batch for our family, and we always add an extra can of clams or two.

I'm thinking that the kids won't miss their dad half as much if they are eating his clam chowder on a regular basis ;)

Wiggly-jiggly Love

Have I told you that I love Bethany? She obviously loves us, because she is baking us sugar cookies... and made us jell-o. That just says "wiggly-jiggly love" to me :)

Where's Waldo... I mean, David?

A few days ago, while driving out to Scout Camp to drop off a pair of shoes, I was talking to Beth and David. "So, how are you guys doing so far, with your dad gone?" Bethany said that she was doing "ok!" and David said "I miss him, but I'm having ALOT of fun!".

Part of the fun is getting to "sleep" in the living room if their chores are done for the day. This is what I woke up to this morning.

There actually are TWO children (and maybe a cat!) hidden in there... somewhere.
